The Buffalo Sabres are in a precarious position just two weeks into the regular season. They have won only two of their first seven games and are searching for answers. The club is coming off a 4-2 win in Chicago on Saturday, but their effort was incomplete against a rebuilding Hawks squad.
The Sabres played without Jordan Greenway in Chicago, who has been one of their most consistent two-way performers so far, but the big winger practiced on Monday at LECOM Harborcenter and head coach Lindy Ruff was optimistic that he will be in the lineup against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.
"I think he's a possibility for tomorrow," Ruff said. "I spent a little time talking to him and he feels like he'll be able to go."
While the top line of JJ Peterka, Tage Thompson, and Alex Tuch has been producing, and the club has been getting more scoring out of the checking line of Greenway, Jason Zucker, and Ryan McLeod, the Sabres are getting little or no offense out of players battling through injuries.
Team captain Rasmus Dahlin has seemed off since missing the first week of training camp with an unspecified injury and has only two assists in seven games. Winger Jack Quinn has only one assist in six games and was scratched in the second of back-to-back games in Columbus. Sophomore Zach Benson is battling a lower-body injury and is scoreless in six games, while second-line center Dylan Cozens is noticeably struggling, with just two assists in seven games.
"(Dylan's) had a lot of good chances, one right in the slot that he put off the crossbar (in Chicago)." Ruff said. "Obviously, it's wearing on him, but I think just continue to do the right things. (If)you play the game the right way, stay on the right side of the puck, play well defensively, it'll go."
The Sabres hope to extend their winning streak to two against the Stars on Tuesday.
