The veteran winger played 62 games for the New York Rangers last season
The Buffalo Sabres prepped for their 2026-27 regular season opener in Columbus later this week with an hour-long practice at Key Bank Center on Tuesday after a two-day, team bonding getaway. The club got down to 23 players on Monday by placing four players on injured reserve,
Aside from minor leaguers Jack Rathbone and Topias Leinonen (who was injured in offseason training), the club placed forwards Conor Sheary and Jason Zucker, along with defensemen Mattias Samuelsson, and Conor Timmins on IR. On Tuesday, Sheary was placed on waivers to be sent down to AHL Rochester.
Other Sabres Stories
The Sabres roster has 14 forwards, six defensemen, and three goalies. Timmins was injured in the preseason finale against Pittsburgh on Saturday and was not on the ice on Tuesday. Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff had hopes that Zellweger might be available for the opener against the Blue Jackets, but the blueliner also did not appear, but was optimistic about Samuelsson, who skated prior to practice.
Sheary, 34, a veteran of 655 NHL games with Pittsburgh, Washington, Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers, and a 55-game stint with Buffalo in 2019-20, signed a one-year, $850,000 deal with the Sabres on July 1, and is expected to play most of the season in the AHL unless injuries hit the NHL club.
