This Buffalo Sabres forward is impressing so far this pre-season.
On Monday (Sept. 23), the Buffalo Sabres put together a strong performance and defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets by a 6-1 final score. Several Sabres players contributed offensively during the matchup, and it was just simply an excellent performance for the Atlantic Division.
Sabres forward Zach Benson was one of the many players who stood out in this game. The 2023 first-round pick had a goal and an assist against the Blue Jackets. They were both from nice plays, too.
Benson's goal was a result of his hard work and good positioning. After Henri Jokiharju's shot hit Benson in front of the net, he quickly took control of the puck and fired it home. While Benson is a skilled forward, he is also not afraid to go into the dirty areas, as this goal demonstrates.
On the assist, Benson showed great skill and speed. After Bowen Byram's pass deflected off his stick into the offensive zone, Benson skated by the Blue Jackets defenseman, made a spin move with the puck, and then set up Dylan Cozens in front with a beautiful feed. Cozens then fired it home.
Benson has been solid all training camp, but this performance against the Blue Jackets stands out. The 19-year-old winger is making a real case for himself to play in the Sabres' top six, and he is starting to form great chemistry with his linemates in the process.
Benson showed last season that he has the potential to produce with the Sabres, posting 11 goals and 30 points in 71 games. When noting that he was 18 years old throughout the 2023-24 season (turned 19 in May), this kind of offense was impressive. However, he is already showing signs that he could be in for a breakout season for the Sabres. Thus, he should receive plenty of chances in the Sabres' top six and on their power play this season.
Nevertheless, seeing what kind of campaign Benson puts together from here will be fun.
