The Buffalo Sabres should not be done making moves this off-season. When taking a look at their current group, it is fair to argue that they could use more forward depth.

Because of this, one free agent who the Sabres should consider bringing in a cheap one-year deal or even a professional tryout (PTO) is forward James van Riemsdyk. 

If the Sabres brought in van Riemsdyk, he would provide them with another forward to consider for their bottom six. The 37-year-old forward is still capable of providing solid secondary offensive production, so he would have the potential to be a good value signing for Buffalo if signed to a cheap deal. 

van Riemsdyk spent last season with the Detroit Red Wings, where he recorded 15 goals and 31 points in 72 games. This was after he had 16 goals and 36 points in 71 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2024-25 and 11 goals and 38 points in 71 games with the Boston Bruins in 2023-24. With numbers like these, JVR has shown that he can still be a decent depth forward. 

van Riemsdyk's experience also adds to his appeal. as he has played 17 NHL seasons. With that, he could be a good mentor for the Sabres' younger players to have around.
