The Sabres failed to add a guaranteed top-six winger in free agency and should call the Jets because of it.

OTP - Is There A Jeff Skinner Decision Looming?

The Buffalo Sabres have been active this offseason, signing Jason Zucker, Sam Lafferty, James Reimer, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, and more. However, while they have added to their roster, they still have not brought in that much-needed top-six winger.

Although the draft is over, the Sabres' elite prospect pool still allows them to have the potential to make a big splash through the trade market. When looking at potential wingers who could grab the Sabres' attention, Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers stands out.

Ehlers, 28, is one of the top trade candidates in the NHL right now. While several big-name players have been moved, the Jets still haven't completed a deal centering around the 2014 ninth-overall pick. That certainly could change before the 2024-25 season begins, and the Sabres should make a real push for him because of it.

Ehlers would provide the Sabres with a guaranteed top-six winger if acquired. He is coming off another strong season, posting 25 goals, 61 points, and a plus-27 rating in 82 games. This kind of production would be significant for a Sabres team looking to end their playoff drought to land.

Ultimately, even after adding multiple new players to their group, they are still in an apparent position to make a splash for an impactful player like Ehlers. Let's see if they try to land him from here.
