Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams said earlier this week after signing Rasmus Dahlin to a max eight-year contract that he was working on getting defenseman Owen Power extended and that the 2021 top pick had indicated he wants to be in Buffalo.

On Wednesday, that indication proved to be accurate, as the Sabres announced they have signed Power to a seven-year, $58.45 million contract extension ($8.35 million AAV) starting in the 2024-25 season.

The Toronto native scored 35 points (4 goals, 31 assists) in his first full season after leaving the University of Michigan and was nominated for the Calder Trophy. Power represents the fifth core player that the Sabres have signed to lengthy extensions, with centers Tage Thompson, Dylan Cozens, and blueliners Dahlin, and Mattias Samuelsson locked up for multiple years.

The deal is similar in term and salary to Ottawa Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson (a fellow client of CAA agent Pat Brisson), who signed an eight-year, $64.4 million deal last month. The deal buys three years of unrestricted free agency and will keep Power under contract until the age of 29.
