Sabres Update: Amerks Appert Subs In For Ailing Granato, Johnson Recalled

The Buffalo Sabres did not hold a morning skate on Saturday prior to their afternoon contest against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The decision may have been in part to the early 5 pm start, but another factor that may have contributed to it was head coach Don Granato's unavailability due to illness which will prevent him from being behind the bench.

"(Don has) been battling the last 48 hours and is just not feeling great. It took a turn the worse last night." Sabres GM Kevyn Adams said. "Doctors got involved and our trainers and they just wanted to make sure that, especially with some of his history they're being smart and it was just best to shut him down today."

Rochester Americans head coach Seth Appert, who was behind the bench for the Amerks 4-2 loss to Hershey on Friday, will coach the Sabres against the Blue Jackets.

In terms of the club’s roster moves, defenseman Ryan Johnson who was sent down on Friday was later recalled. Granato indicated that the move might be temporary, and bringing Johnson back gets the roster back to the limit of 23 players.

The Sabres were expected to activate Zemgus Girgensons off of injured reserve, but the club did not do so. Adams indicated the veteran forward will likely make his return on Sunday against Ottawa, which means the club will need to make another move before that contest, with goalie Eric Comrie or forward Eric Robinson being the likely players going on waivers.
