The Buffalo Sabres made more roster moves based on an increasing amount of injuries on Monday. Prior to their 6-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, the Sabres placed defenseman Mattias Samuelsson on injured reserve and called up blueliner Ryan Johnson, who registered an assist in his first NHL game.
Prior to their practice at Key Bank Center, the club placed forward Brandon Biro on IR and recalled Matthew Savoie from his AHL conditioning stint. The 19-year-old suffered an upper-body injury in the Sabres prospect tournament in mid-September and was sent to Rochester for two weeks.
"With how long it was since I played a meaningful game, it definitely took a game or two, but I tried to try my best to just jump both feet in,” Savoie said after his first practice. “I thought I did a good job with that, just attacking it the day I got there and found out some success."
In six games with the Amerks, Savoie had five points (2 goals, 3 assists) and six penalty minutes. Sabres head Don Granato indicated that the plan is for the young forward to practice with the club this week, ramping him up for his NHL debut in the near future.
"It was nice to get him some games. I didn't get to see obviously with our schedules being busy, but I watched a few shifts. He looked like he fit in well, and that was the reports of talking to the coaches there and it's an opportunity for us to see where he's at here.” Granato said. “That doesn't mean it'll be in the lineup (on Tuesday in Carolina), but he was able to skate with us today and we'll see where that goes day by day."
