The Ticking Clock Towards The Trade Deadline; Scouts At Sabres - Hurricanes

The Buffalo Sabres have been a popular view for NHL clubs looking to add some depth before the March 8th trade deadline, with a half dozen pending unrestricted free agents and the potential that they will be shopping young players over the next 12 days.

With Buffalo hosting the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday afternoon, representatives from seven NHL clubs, including the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Vegas Golden Knights, were in attendance at Key Bank Center.

Forwards Zemgus Girgensons, Victor Olofsson, Kyle Okposo, Eric Robinson, defenseman Erik Johnson, and goalie Eric Comrie are on expiring contracts.

The Avalanche, Lightning, and Golden Knights are likely focusing on the right-handed Johnson, who won a Stanley Cup in 2022 and could be retiring at the end of the season. The Fourth Period reported that the Avs may be interested in Olofsson, who scored 28 goals last season but only has four goals this year.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported last week that a number of clubs have been checking in Sabres center Casey Mittelstadt (who is a restricted free agent this summer), but a trade for the 25-year-old may be a better fit after the season when a hockey deal might be more easily accomplished.
