The Sabres drafted Von Barnekow in the sixth round of the 2021 NHL Draft

The Buffalo Sabres are considered one of the best deepest prospect pools in the NHL, not only because of their selecting high in recent drafts but also due to their eye for talent and their organizational choices of either leaving players to develop in their home countries or bringing them to North America. Leading up to the opening of training camp in mid-September, we will look at the club’s top 40 prospects. All are 25 years old or younger, whose rights are currently held by the Sabres or are on AHL or NHL deals and have played less than 40 NHL games.

32. William Von Barnekow- Forward (Malmo - SHL)
Von Barnekow was the Sabres first pick in the sixth round of the 2021 NHL Draft out of the Malmo Jr. system after scoring more than a point-per-game (7 goals, 14 assists in 18 games) and getting a two-game look for the SHL parent club as an 18-year-old.
In 2021-22, the 6’3”, 190 lb. forward split time between the junior level and SHL again, with stark differences in success. At the under-20 level, Von Barnekow had 31 points in 27 games, but at the pro level in the SHL and second-level Allsvenskan, he went without a point in 35 games.
Playing on the same club as Sabres 2023 second-rounder Anton Wahlberg the last two seasons, Von Barnekow has been slow in his offensive progress (9 goals, 9 assists in 85 SHL games), but with his size and skating ability, could be a good fit as a defensive depth forward down the line if he comes to North America.
