Buffalo made eight selections at the NHL Draft in Nashville

The Buffalo Sabres were ranked as having the top prospect pool in the NHL according to the Athletic. This is partially the benefit of selecting so high in recent drafts, but the club has also appeared to have a keen eye for talent and has promising youngsters that they’ve selected in the lower rounds.

Here is the final update on how players selected in 2023 did this season:

Ethan Miedema – LW – 109th overall

The 6’4”, 201 lb. winger reflected the trend of the Sabres being more focused on adding players with size. The 19-year-old finished with 41 points (18 goals, 23 assists) 68 games, and had a goal in five playoff games for the Frontenacs in their first-round playoff loss to North Bay.

Scott Ratzlaff – G – 141st overall

After putting up a 25-8-1 record with a loaded Seattle Thunderbirds squad in 2023, the 19-year-old put up more pedestrian numbers this season (21-26-2, 3.33 GAA, .905 save percentage) as the primary starter for the rebuilding WHL club. Ratzlaff was the third goalie for Canada at the World Junior Championships in Sweden and that will likely have him in the mix for the 2025 WJC this December.

Sean Keohane – D – 173rd overall

A physical specimen at 6’4”, 183 lb., Keohane came out Dexter Southfield Prep in Massachusetts and was slated to play a full season in the USHL with Tri-City before heading to Harvard, but after 16 games, the 19-year-old shifted to West Kelowna in the BCHL, where he has 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists) in 25 games.

Norwin Panocha – D – 205th overall

Drafted out of Berlin in the DEL, the 6’2”, 190 lb. defenseman opted to come to North America and play for Chicoutimi in the QMJHL. In his first season, Panocha finished with 15 assists in 52 regular season games and the 19-year-old has one assist in eight playoff games for the Sagueneens.
