Savoie’s status for tournament in question after injury vs. Sweden
The Buffalo Sabres had only one of their seven prospects in action on Day #5 of the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden on Saturday, but the news of the day revolved around the injury status of 2022 first-rounder Matthew Savoie.
The 19-year-old played over 16 minutes in Canada’s 2-0 loss to Sweden on Friday but did not practice with the club on Saturday. Head coach Alan Letang indicated that Savoie was given a maintenance day due to something that occurred during the game, but on Saturday, Sabres GM Kevyn Adams said that the young center is undergoing an MRI to evaluate the extent of a lower-body injury.
"(Savoie) was stiff and sore today, as they expected, but they don't think it's a major injury," Adams said. "I don't want to speculate too much, but they do have concerns that he may miss the rest of the World Juniors."
The only player in action on Saturday was 2023 draftee Norwin Panocha, and the Sabres 2023 seventh-rounder scored a goal for Germany in a 6-2 loss to Latvia.
