After missing most of last season due to injuries, Monahan re-signs with the Montreal Canadiens
Boring Monahan is giving it another shot in Montreal.
Former Calgary Flames associate captain Sean Monahan, whose career has been hampered immensely by injuries in each of the past half-dozen seasons and a litany of surgeries, opted against becoming an unrestricted free-agent by re-signing with the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
Monahan, the 2013 first-round pick who will turn 29 in October, inked a one-year deal that can be worth $2 million. He was limited to only 25 games last season, in which he collected six goals and 11 assists and an emotional return to Calgary last December.
After he collected 212 goals and 250 assists over nine seasons in Calgary, Monahan was dealt to the Canadiens along with a conditional 2025 first-round draft choice last summer to clear up salary cap space.
Monahan was rejuvenated in the first quarter of the season, but suffered a foot injury only a couple of games after the Calgary clash and then a groin injury while rehabilitating. He had surgery in April.
On top of his on-ice success, Monahan is the subject of a well-followed Twitter account @boringmonahan, a jab at his on-camera persona during interviews.
Presumably healthy again, Monahan will be a candidate for a trade-deadline deal for the rebuilding Canadiens to add more prospects and/or picks.
