Calgary Believed to Have Interest in Martin Necas

As the Carolina Hurricanes' season came to a close last week, it started the beginning of what will be a long summer of contract negotiations, especially now with a new general manager. While players like RFAs Seth Jarvis and Jack Drury seem very likely to re-sign, winger Martin Necas has been rumored to potentially be on the move.

According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Flames are one of the teams who are believed to have a level of interest in the 25-year-old Czech. Vancouver, Boston, and Philadelphia among others are also linked to Necas.

Necas is coming off a 53-point season, scoring 24 goals and adding 29 assists. He added 9 points in this season's playoffs. This year was a setback compared to his 71-point season two seasons ago, which led the Hurricanes.

According to Pagnotta, Necas' father indicated in a recent interview that his son prefers to play a higher role on the team and wants more powerplay time. Under head coach Rod Brind'Amour, Necas has primarily played on the wing, even though he is listed as a centre.

Should the Flames pull the trigger on a trade for Necas, he would be a really nice add to the top-six. If they are willing to play him at centre, stacking Nazem Kadri and Necas has real promise as a 1C and 2C. An acquisition of Necas immediately fills a gaping hole at centre left by the trade of Elias Lindholm at this season's trade deadline.

It has never been a talent issue with Necas. His world-class speed sets him apart, especially in 4-on-4 and overtime scenarios where he takes advantage of the open ice. It remains to be seen if defensively he can be reliable, but in a system unlike Carolina's man-on-man defense, it could open a new sort of freedom for Necas to thrive.

Prior to resigning as general manager, Don Waddell insinuated that Carolina would not just be looking to part with Necas. They still believe highly in him and the right sort of deal would have to come. My hunch is that it would not just take a high pick and prospects, but likely a solid player off a roster for a deal to get done.

Necas was in the middle of the trade conversation at the trade deadline as the Canes looked to bring in Vancouver's Elias Pettersson before the Canucks reached an extension. Carolina also showed interest in Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark at the deadline, but it is unsure whether Necas was involved in those talks.
