Five professional hockey players took indefinite leaves from their clubs in the last few days. Calgary Flames winger Dillon Dube among them, with the franchise citing mental health as the reason for his departure.
Five members of Canada’s 2018 world junior team are expected to be charged with sexual assault in the coming weeks. Dube was captain of that squad.
It’s not yet known if the 25-year-old is one of the handful who — according to a report in the Globe and Mail on Wednesday — have been told to surrender to police in London, Ont., to be formally charged.
“I saw the reports this morning just like everybody else, but I don’t have any information on it at all,” Calgary Flames head coach Ryan Huska told reporters on Wednesday. “I’m sorry about that.”
The Flames put out a statement on Sunday granting Dube an indefinite leave of absence to attend to his mental health. Those that have followed regarding the other world junior players only cite personal reasons.
The reported pending charges are connected to an alleged group sexual assault of a woman in a hotel room in 2018.
