Craig Conroy is doing his best be patient, but he's letting teams know of his interest in certain players.
Calgary Flames GM Craig Conroy appeared on The Ray & Dregs Hockey Podcast this week and was asked about shopping ahead of this season's NHL Trade Deadline. Admitting he likes the fact the team is winning, he wants to add but feels the pressure of staying patient.
Understanding the focus is on the future, Dreger asked how active Conroy wants to be to make the team better this season. "You're always looking to improve your team, that's the one thing for sure," Conroy admitted.
Not ready to mortgage his future, he added, "You're talking, you're calling other teams, just seeing, kind of, where they're at."
"I love winning, this is a great feeling. If we continue to do this, then it might make sense at some point to add something, for sure."
Dreger said on TSN Insider Trading that the something Conroy is looking for is an age-appropriate center. He wants it to be a top-six center. He wants someone who can play second-line minutes for the Flames for the next three to five years. Dreger repeated what Conroy told him on his show, which was that he could get aggressive if the Flames hang in the mix after a solid start.
Ray Ferraro asked if it gets frustrating when nothing is happening on the trade front and teams aren't necessarily making a move. "I'm learning the quick answer is no," he noted when it comes to talking to other teams about their players. Opposing clubs aren't at a point where they are ready to make moves.
That's not going to stop Conroy from checking in.
He says his job is to check in and noted that other GMs need to know that, if and when they are ready to make a move, Conroy is available to take their call and has expressed interest in a trade. "That's all you can really do and you gotta be patient."
Conroy did admit he's trying to retool the team as quickly as possible and find players who will help them today.
