With Oscar Dansk re-signed, Calgary has four netminders in the fold

The Calgary Flames goaltending tree is in place and looks exactly the same as last season.

Whether that is the case when the 2023-24 season kicks off remains to be seen.

The Flames announced on Tuesday that Oscar Dansk has re-signed with a one-year, two-way contract, the first move for new general manager Craig Conroy.

Dansk, 29. spent last season as the backup to AHL goaltender of the year Dustin Wolf with the Calgary Wranglers. Dansk posted an 8-6-2 record with a 2.75-goals against average and .905 save percentage. His value also includes serving as a mentor to Wolf, who has been the AHL’s top netminder each of his first two pro seasons.

His contract is reportedly worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $275,000 in the AHL. Dansk was also lauded for his community work, named the Wranglers’ winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year Award.

The Flames have four goaltenders, all with NHL experience in the fold, with Jacob Markstrom, Dan Vladar, Wolf and Dansk.

The big decision will be Wolf’s role next season. Having essentially proven all he can in the minors, a spot with the big club is currently blocked by Vladar, whose two-year, $4.4-million contract kicks in next season.
