The Calgary Flames are heating up heading into Monday night’s matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Winners of three straight and four of their last five games, the Flames have found their footing after a difficult start to the season. Strong goaltending and an effective power play have been key to the turnaround, helping Calgary build some early momentum.

Devin Cooley is expected to get the start in net, marking his fourth consecutive appearance. He has won each of his last three starts against the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes and Detroit Red Wings.

Cooley was particularly impressive last week, stopping 66 of 68 shots across two starts. He posted a 1.00 goals-against average and a .971 save percentage, earning NHL Second Star of the Week honours for his efforts.

The Flames’ power play has also been a major factor in their recent success. Operating at 32 per cent on the season, Calgary ranks fourth in the NHL and will look to keep that production going against Toronto.

Captain Mikael Backlund remains a game-time decision as he continues to recover from an upper-body injury. His availability would provide a boost for a Flames team looking to extend its winning streak to four games.

Monday will also mark rookie Gavin McKenna’s first visit to the Saddledome as a member of the Maple Leafs. McKenna has recorded three goals and five assists for eight points through 13 games this season.

With both teams riding winning streaks, the Flames will have an opportunity to continue their climb in the standings against a Toronto team that presents a tough test. Calgary’s goaltending and power-play production will be key as the club looks to make it four straight wins.
