Calgary blows a 1-0 third-period lead en route to a 5-2 loss in Pittsburgh

The Calgary Flames were no match for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ big guns.

The Penguins may be a two-line team, but that’s all they needed en route to beating the Flames 5-2 Saturday night.

Calgary, which has four more games remaining on this early season road trip, held a 1-0 lead going into the third period thanks to Matt Coronato’s first NHL tally, but Bryan Rust scored 18 seconds into the final frame, Reilly Smith tallied 23 seconds later and the hosts never looked back.

Jake Guenztel, who finished with three points, and Evgeni Malkin also scored before Jonathan Huberdeau’s first of the season late made it a respectable final score.

Rust’s second of the night into the empty net sealed the deal.

Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom was outstanding until the third period, especially in the opening frame when the Penguins were unable to score despite three power plays.

However, Calgary’s stream of giveaways, missed passes and even a lost face-off proved costly.

Markstrom finished with 25 saves.

Pens goalie Alex Nedeljovic stopped 34 shots.
