PuckPedia released the results of their PuckGM feature, which calculated over 1,600 mock drafts. Who did the Calgary Flames end up selecting?

On Tuesday evening, PuckPedia released the results of over 1,600 mock NHL drafts from their PuckGM feature on their website. As expected, Gavin McKenna will go first overall, followed by Ivar Stenberg, just like many of the hockey insiders and experts projected.

Outside of the top two, it is anyone's guess which player falls into which slot after. According to PuckGM, the Calgary Flames will pick defenseman Keaton Verhoeff, a player linked to the club in many other mock drafts.

The 18-year-old is from Fort Saskatchewan, AB, giving Calgary a chance to draft and grow a local player, something they haven't done in quite a while.

Last year, Verhoeff played at the University of North Dakota, scoring 20 points in 36 games, his first season in the NCAA. In addition, he was captain of Canada's U18 team and played for the U20 team at the World Juniors, where he won a bronze medal. Verhoeff earned a spot on the NCAA's NCHC All-Rookie Team.

After trading for right-handed defenseman Simon Nemec on Tuesday afternoon, the Flames may not be interested in drafting another one to add to their pipeline, which is why General Manager Craig Conroy may want to go in a different direction and select a different prospect like forward Viggo Björck, Wyatt Cullen, or Caleb Malhorta, if they are available.

However, there are some top-talented defenseman projected to be selected around Calgary's No. 6 spot, including Daxon Rudolph, Chase Reid, or Carson Carels, once again, if they are available.

Considering the Flames are rebuilding and looking to contend for a playoff spot in their inaugural season at Scotia Place, whoever they draft this weekend may not have an immediate impact on the lineup, but may do so in a season or two.

There is a lot of pressure on the team to draft well or continue using their draft capital to acquire young, promising talent to stabilize the team's core and support future success. It goes without saying that this weekend will be a big one for the Flames organization.
