Could Ethan Wyttenbach become one of the biggest steals of the 2025 NHL Draft? The Flames prospect continues to impress this summer.
The Calgary Flames may have found a diamond in the rough at the 2025 NHL Draft, selecting winger Ethan Wyttenbach in the fifth round at 144th overall. For those fans who love following prospects, the 19-year-old from Roslyn, NY, has been all over the news in the past week, leading the World Junior Summer Showcase in scoring with 12 points in six games.
Unsurprisingly, this comes just months after Wyttenbach finished his freshman season at Quinnipiac University, where he led the entire NCAA in scoring with 59 points in 40 games, thanks to 25 goals and 34 assists. As one of the top players for the Americans heading into the upcoming World Junior Championship in Alberta, Wyttenbach is almost a lock to make his U20 debut and showcase his skills in front of the local crowds who may wear his Flames sweater one day.
Despite an outstanding rookie season, Wyttenbach was only a Hobey Baker finalist, the annual award for being the top player in college hockey, losing out to Max Plante, who had 25 goals and 52 points. Interestingly, Plante was a fourth-round pick by the Detroit Red Wings, suggesting teams are finding elite-level players outside the first round. Although these college successes don't necessarily transition to promising NHL careers, it appears that Wyttenbach is doing the necessary things on this path to the Flames.
Calgary fans should expect to see him at training camp, since he participated in the team's prospect camp. Although he is a long shot to make the NHL this season, Wyttenbach will be back in the NCAA for the 2026-27 season, continuing his development in hopes of landing a role with the rebuilding Flames in the near future.
