The Calgary Flames have signed recently acquired Cornell forward Jonathan Castagna to a three-year entry-level contract as the two-way standout prepares to begin his professional career.

A newly acquired prospect is set to begin his professional career within the Calgary Flames organization.

The club announced Monday that Cornell University forward Jonathan Castagna has signed a three-year, entry-level contract carrying an average annual value of $1.075 million. The deal will take effect at the start of the 2026–27 season.

Castagna will join the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers on a professional tryout agreement (PTO) for the remainder of the current campaign, though he is currently listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

The 20-year-old forward was acquired by Calgary on March 4 from Utah as part of the trade involving defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. Originally selected in the third round (70th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes, Castagna has continued to develop into a well-rounded two-way presence.

In his junior season at Cornell, the Toronto native led the Big Red in scoring with 34 points (15 goals, 19 assists) across 34 games. The six-foot-two forward earned All-ECAC First Team honors and was recognized as the conference’s top defensive forward, underscoring his impact at both ends of the ice.

Cornell’s season came to an end with a first-round exit in the NCAA Tournament at the hands of Denver.

Who knows what will come of the young Castagna. Anything would be better than what we saw last night on display at Ball Arena, as the Flames were ruthlessly dispatched by the Avalanche 9-2. Nazem Kadri, who was traded by the Flames back to the Avs for Victor Olofsson, Max Curran, and two draft picks, scored two power play goals on his old team.

And if that wasn't bad enough, Dustin Wolf was pulled not even halfway through the first period as the Avalanche didn't come out to mess around. They scored five goals in the first, four on Wolf, and one on Devin Cooley, before adding four more throughout the course of the night.
