The Flames are adding serious size and physicality to their blue line pipeline, signing towering Hitmen captain Axel Hurtig to a three-year entry-level deal after his breakout WHL season.

The Calgary Flames have added size and edge to their blue line pipeline, signing defenceman Axel Hurtig to a three-year entry-level contract, the club announced Thursday.

Hurtig, a 6-foot-5, 216-pound native of Högås, Sweden, is coming off a career-best season as captain of the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen. The 19-year-old recorded 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) and 46 penalty minutes across 64 games, emerging as a steady, physical presence on the back end.

His impact has carried into the postseason. Hurtig has a goal and two assists through the first three games of the Hitmen’s opening-round series, helping Calgary surge to a commanding 3–0 lead.

Drafted in the seventh round (208th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft, Hurtig has steadily developed into a reliable shutdown option. According to Elite Prospects, his game is defined by his imposing frame and physicality — a “towering presence” who can smother opposing forwards along the boards and make life difficult once play settles in the corners.

Hurtig also brings international experience, having represented Sweden at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. He appeared in 11 playoff games for the Hitmen last season after posting 16 points in 55 regular-season contests, continuing to build his resume as a dependable, defense-first blueliner.

While offensive production isn’t the hallmark of his game, Hurtig’s size, reach, and willingness to engage physically give him a clear identity — one that aligns with Calgary’s emphasis on structure and toughness.

With his entry-level deal now in place, Hurtig takes the next step toward the professional ranks, offering the Flames a long-term project with intriguing defensive upside.
