Flames' Wolf Overlooked In Calder Trophy Voting

On Monday, NHL.com announced that 16 of their writers cast their votes in a mock election for the winner of the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year. 

Unfortunately, Calgary Flames netminder Dustin Wolf, having a historic rookie season, has become overlooked, finishing third in the vote behind Lane Hutson (Montreal) and Macklin Celebrini (San Jose), but ahead of Matvei Michkov (Philadelphia). 

If the season ended today, the Flames would qualify for the playoffs despite having the 32nd-ranked offense, which scored just 161 goals and produced a league-worst 2.56 goals per game. 

Meanwhile, Wolf has single-handedly dragged Calgary into the Western Conference wildcard race. Here's a look at his rankings among rookie goalies in the NHL.

Moreover, Wolf ranks among the NHL's elite when discussing his statistics with netminders who have skated at least 38 games, sharing space with former Vezina Trophy winners and candidates. 

A deeper dive into Wolf's performance would see that his 22 wins account for 73.3% of Calgary's victories, which is the same stratosphere as Connor Hellebuyck (84.0%) and Andrei Vasilevskiy (81.0%), but higher than Jake Oettinger (71.4%) and Sergei Bobrovsky (67.5%), the top four winningest goalies this season.

After this weekend, Hutson leads all rookie scorers with 49 points, followed by Celebrini (48 points), and Michkov (47 points). Celebrini and Michkov have already scored 20 goals while Hutson has the 18th most assists in the NHL.

Interestingly, only Wolf was in a playoff position at the time of the vote, and only Celebrini was tied for the team lead in scoring, making this Calder Trophy race one of the more fascinating and entertaining races to watch in the season's final month.
