Matt Coronato Leads NHL In Interesting Stat Over Last Two Pre-Seasons

Robert Munnich of FlamesNation published an interesting social media post this week regarding Calgary Flames forward Matt Coronato.

He noted: "A pretty crazy stat. Matt Coronato leads the entire NHL in preseason scoring over the last two years with 12 points in 8 games." He then added, "Some players he's outscored who are in the top 10 include Connor McDavid, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Jack Eichel, and Nick Suzuki."

It's easy to read too much into this. After all, it's just pre-season and the level of competition, ice time, and other factors should be considered. For example, the number of pre-season games alone plays into this in a big way.

McDavid isn't exactly going to play a bunch of pre-season games. There's the risk of injury and he knows he's going to lead the Oilers every season, so there's nothing to prove. He's also not fighting for a spot on the roster like Coronato has been in the last couple of years. The Flames wanted to and needed to see what he could do. Pre-season has been more important to him.

Still, it's a fun little stat that shows there's some potential there with the player.

On a points-per-game basis, Coronato doesn't lead the league, but he's still been quite effective when it comes to games where he's had to show well to potentially earn a spot on the roster.

This summer, once again, he's trying to earn a job. He's having a fantastic camp and pre-season and it is believed he'll be a regular this season, with Puck Pedia slotting into a bottom-six left-wing role on their depth charts. Still, nothing is guaranteed, so every game ahead of the regular season matters.
