The Flames have acquired defenceman Jacob Middleton from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Blake Coleman, Olli Maatta and multiple picks.

According to earlier reports from Sportsnet’s Elliot Friedman and TSN insider Darren Dreger, the Flames and Wild agreed to the notable multi-player trade involving established NHL veterans and future assets on Thursday.

The trade also includes salary retention, with the Flames reportedly holding back 50 percent of Coleman’s $4.9 million cap hit as part of the agreement. His current contract is set to run through next season.

As part of the return package, Minnesota is also sending draft capital to Calgary, including multiple picks; a 3rd round pick in 2027, a 4th round pick in 2028 and a 2nd round pick in 2029.

Coleman, 34, is coming off a productive season in Calgary in which he recorded 20 goals and 35 points across 69 regular-season appearances. The veteran winger is entering the final year of a six-year contract originally signed at $29.4 million.

Middleton appeared in 75 regular-season games for the Wild last season, finishing with 16 points (2g, 14a).

The 30-year-old left-shot defenceman (Wainwright, AB) is currently in the second year of his four-year contract worth $17.4 million, which carries a $4.35 million average annual value.
