Data website reveals fastest skaters, hardest shooters and much more
Who on the Calgary Flames this season has zipped down the ice at the fastest speed during a game? Which player has blasted the hardest shot?
The NHL unveiled its new data tracking website — NHL Edge — and that information and more is available for all to see.
According to the player tracking element (and this may come as a surprise), big defenseman Nikita Zadorov has reached the highest peak speed of any Flames player being tracked, reaching 22.54 miles per hour during the third period of Friday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. From the data collected, the average top speed of all teams is 22.79 MPH.
As for the hardest shot recorded by a Flames player so far this season, that award goes to fourth-line winger Walker Duehr, with a 95.12 MPH blast in the second period of the Oct. 14 game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The league average for hardest shot is 95.29 MPH. By the way, Duehr’s fastest skating speed recorded is 22.03 MPH.
For reference, Rasmus Andersson’s hardest shot topped at 94.21.
There is plenty of information about the goaltenders, too, including the location of shots faced and save percentage against shots from various areas.
Although the feelings about the Flames right now may be low while they struggle, there are positives to note. Calgary is among the league leaders with 43.7 percent offensive zone time, and only 38.1% defensive zone time.
The Flames are also near the top of the league in shots on goal (the 7.9% shooting percentage is below the league average of 9.9%), and the site provides location of shots taken, and save percentage from the various areas.
