Amidst all the trade deadline discussion Markstrom reached the 100-win mark during his Flames tenure

Candice Ward-USA TODAY Sports - Ahead By A Century: Calgary Flames Goaltender Jacob Markstrom Joins An Elite Club

Jacob Markstrom joined a select group when the Calgary Flames claimed Monday’s 6-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Thanks to that victory, Markstrom became the fourth goalie to earn 100 wins in Calgary silks, joining a list that includes only Miikka Kiprusoff (305), Mike Vernon (262) and Reggie Lemelin (136 of the 144 he netted with the franchise). Dan Bouchard did win 168 games for the Flames franchise, but all but four came while the team was based in Atlanta.

Markstrom’s achievement is impressive — even if it proves how poorly the Flames have been at drafting and developing their own number-one netminders (a story for another day).

Markstrom, whose next starting assignment will be his 200th for the Flames and will likely be Thursday against the Boston Bruins, has enjoyed a stellar bounce-back campaign. The runner-up for the 2021-22 Vezina Trophy who had a forgettable 2022-23 season, has been outstanding this year for a Calgary club that will most likely miss the playoffs, with a 18-15-2 record, 2.60 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. He is near the top of the league in goals-save-above-expected.

His resurgence has come in the midst of trade rumours, which will grow louder and louder until the March 8 deadline, even while Markstrom has two more seasons beyond this campaign on his six-year contract with a $6 million salary and includes a no-movement clause.

Markstrom taking his place among this group also proves how crucial both Vernon and Kiprusoff were to this group, and deserving of an honour it will be when Kiprusoff’s No. 34 is retired and lifted to the rafters before the March 2 game.
