Calgary wins for the fourth time this season when trailing after two periods, comes against the defending Stanley Cup champions
MacKenzie Weegar with a coast-to-coast buzzer-beating overtime winning goal that Bobby Orr would applaud.
Dan Vladar with an outstanding 25-save performance.
The Calgary Flames came up with a whale of a way to beat the defending Stanley Cup-champion Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 on Monday at the Saddledome.
The Flames (9-10-3) actually moved into the Western Conference’s second wild-card spot.
Vladar was pressed into service because Jacob Markstrom couldn’t play due to illness — which necessitated emergency back-up Dustin Nickel be signed to an amateur contract just before puck drop — and delivered.
Among his highlight-reel stops were a pair against Nicolas Roy, especially on a one-timer during two-on-one rush in the second period, when it was a 1-0 Vegas lead.
Vladar’s third period featured a clutch stop on Ivan Barbashev’s breakaway when it was a 1-1 clash.
By no means were the Flames perfect, but they deserved to win against a Golden Knights team that is on a 3-5-2 skid and has now scored only three goals in its last four outings.
A.J. Greer’s fourth goal of the season — an impressive stat for a depth player claimed off waivers on the eve of the season — proved clutch and erased the deficit created by William Karlsson’s first-period power-play goal.
Greer scored five goals last season in 61 games for the record-setting regular season-champion Boston Bruins.
