Calgary came out of Day 1 of free-agency frenzy without making any significant moves, showing GM Craig Conroy's mindset to lead with young guns at the forefront.
On free agency eve, they made that much clear by sending qualifying offers to a group of RFAs primarily consisting of prospects: forwards Rory Kerins, Sam Morton and Connor Zary, and blueliners Yan Kuznetsov and Jeremie Poirier.
They also have right-handed defencemen in Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz who will likely be regular faces on the roster come training camp, as they don't have much to prove in the OHL and AHL respectively.
Memorial Cup participants defenceman Etienne Morin and forward Andrew Basha will be joining the Flames' AHL affiliate team, the Wranglers, and we have covered how great they have been in their respective CHL league championships, as well as the Memorial Cup itself.
And speaking of the AHL, the aforementioned-Kerins brought good tidings to the Flames, being the highest-scoring prospect in the AHL as part of the Wranglers and being named to the AHL All-Star Classic.
Plus, we have mentioned many times over that except for Kevin Bahl, the left side of the defence is not very deep.
You have Kuznetsov and Poirier, who scored the third-highest number of points amongst defencemen prospects in the AHL, who are left handed-shots, and can fill the Flames' need for depth.
Of course, we can't forget about the 2026 draft picks Cole Reschny and Cullen Potter who will be taking their talents to the NCAA this fall.
Expect more young gunslingers to join as the Flames have five picks in the first three rounds of the 2026 NHL Draft, including two in the first.
