Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Alexander Nikishin is at the very beginning of what the 'Canes hope is a long and fruitful NHL career. But in this interview with Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour, it was clear the language barrier is still an issue for the Russian blueliner.
"He's better, for sure," Brind'Amour said of Nikishin's communication issues. "In a perfect world, this wouldn't be an issue, but it is. You can't hide from it. The communication that happens in a game and in a teaching environment, it's so vital. To sit there and think they know what you're talking about when they don't understand the language is hard. It is an issue. I think he's way better now, but we'll see how much he's actually retaining when we get playing."
What are your expectations for Nikishin this season? How many points do you think he'll post? And do you think his English issues will be a problem?
