The Carolina Hurricanes stomped the Boston Bruins 4-1 Tuesday night at TD Garden.
In the win, Andrei Svechnikov scored his third career lacrosse goal, Teuvo Teravainen matched his career high in goals (23), Jake Guentzel extended his point streak to six games, Seth Jarvis reached the 30-goal mark with a shorthanded tally and Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 22 of 23.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Svechnikov, Guentzel and Jarvis spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On the win: I think it was a great team win, a great team effort. Everyone played solidly. A couple of big plays obviously. Jarvy's shorthanded goal probably put the game away there. Could have gone a different way if they got a power play goal. And then [Kochetkov] made some real good saves in the third when they kind of had their push going. Overall I thought it was a good 60-minute effort.
On Seth Jarvis: We've talked a lot about him throughout the year obviously. He's just growing as a player and he's just doing what he does. He does everything that we ask him to do and he just keeps getting better. The future's definitely bright for him.
On Andrei Svechnikov: He was really good tonight too. We were just talking about [the lacrosse goal]. Six years or whenever he first did it, it was a wow-factor, now everyone's kind of like, 'Oh, no big deal.' He kind of revolutionized it. When it was done 20, 30 years ago, we had kind of forgotten about it and now every kid can do it and it's really because of when Andrei did it. That one was impressive with how fast it was. Again, it was a big goal in the game.
On the second period: The first period, I thought we were pretty good too. Missed the net a few times, but I liked that we didn't really give them a ton of chances and that's really the key. Second period we were able to get a couple of goals and that kind of changes the momentum. They got the one, but overall I thought for 60 minutes, we were pretty solid.
On his favorite thing about coaching the team this season: It's the personalities of the group. I've said for years about what a great group it is and we just keep seeming to find new guys that just fit. So it's special for me because I get to come to work with these guys everyday. We're pushing for something special and we'll see where it goes.
On Pyotr Kochetkov: It's not necessarily how many [saves], it's the [saves] you have to make when the game's tight and tonight it was. In the third period, all of a sudden he was in all alone and he makes a big save. Just the timing of the saves have been really key and clutch and that's really what goaltending does.
Andrei Svechnikov
On his lacrosse goals: The first one will always be the first one and it always will be. Obviously it's fun to score those ones and I'm glad I did that and we got the win. The first one is always the first one and you get lots of text messages. I haven't opened my phone yet, but I'm sure there will be some. The second one was more quiet and I'm sure the third one will be more quiet as well, but it's always exciting. I'm scoring for something. I'm just trying to help the team win and I like to score those ones as well.
On the mindset approaching a lacrosse goal: Just when I beat the D... actually I didn't have the space to be honest because the D, his stick was right on me, so I just kind of did it quick and it was nice that he didn't get my stick. Got a little bit lucky and hopefully we're going to see more.
On knowing he scored as the game kept going on: That's the toughest part, especially after those kinds of goals. You kind of want to celebrate. I knew it was a goal but the ref didn't show it, so I'm like, 'Should I celebrate or no?' I didn't know what to do, to be honest. Obviously they called it though and it was nice.
On the win: Huge win especially playing against Boston. They're a really good team and we lost the last game against them and we know we can see them in the playoffs, so it's huge for us and gives us big confidence.
On being ready for the playoffs: Yeah, especially playing against Boston. They're one of the best teams in the league and just to beat them gives us confidence. There's still a few games to go and we have to play those three games and then we can get to the playoffs.
On shutting down Boston's skill players: Our system, the way we play one-on-one, it's kind of hard to play against us. I feel that way. Because it's one-on-one, we always stay with them and don't give them room.
Jake Guentzel
On the keys to the win: We played smart. The penalty kill was really good and our goaltender played really well. When you have those, you have to make sure you don't make mistakes and we did that tonight.
On what's been the most fun part of being on the Canes: It's been a little bit of a run. The team's obviously really well coached and it's such a good team so for me, it's playing with special players and our lines been playing really well, so it's been fun for me.
On the team' picking up it's third consecutive season with 50 wins: That's an unbelievable accomplishment. Playing against them all those years, you know how hard this team is to play against. So to just join them now and be on this side is a good feeling and hopefully many more wins will come.
On the game's physicality: That's hockey. It's going to be physical sometimes. It gets you into the game faster and it's a fun to be a part of those.
On Andrei Svechnikov's lacrosse goal: It's just unbelievable the amount of skill he has. First time I've seen it in person so it was just an unbelievable goal and to see the smile on guy's faces was pretty special.
On Seth Jarvis: He makes it fun out there. He's having a good time and he's obviously a really good player. Just an unbelievable goal by him tonight and those two have made it really easy on me to come in and play on their line. We've had fun lately and hopefully it continues in the playoffs.
On if he feels the team is ready for the playoffs: Yeah, there's a couple of games left and we have to make sure we're trending in the right direction. Three games coming up and we can't take the foot off the gas. We have to make sure we're ready to go.
On limiting the Bruins: They play fast and play hard and were in our face all night so we just have to make sure we get pucks deep. They have some highly gifted offensive players so just have to make them defend.
Seth Jarvis
On the win: It was huge. We knew coming in we were only a couple points behind them so there was a little bit more on the table for us, but yeah, I think we just played a good game. I mean, Svechy starting off with "The Svechnikov" was awesome and then PK was unbelievable in net.
On reaching the 30-goal milestone: It was just a great play by everyone involved and to hit 30 goals means a lot to me and to to do it in a place like this means even more. I have a lot of people in my corner and it means a lot more for them.
On setting the tone for the rest of the season: Just finishing strong. We want to go into the playoffs on a roll so just have to gear up, get ready for a little road trip and hopefully get a couple days rest before the playoffs.
