The Carolina Hurricanes burst open the floodgates against the Ottawa Senators Sunday night, scoring four goals in the third period en route to a 7-2 win at the Canadian Tire Centre.

It was all about the blueline in the win as the Canes' defense combined for three goals and nine points in the contest.

Dmitry Orlov led the way for Carolina with a two goal, four point night — the second four-point game of his career — and his partner Jalen Chatfield also lit the lamp and had an assist too.

Frederik Andersen also earned his fourth straight win since returning from injury, stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced.

Orlov set the tone early, after being sprung for a breakaway goal following a first period penalty kill, but Ottawa managed to keep it close with Thomas Chabot answering with a terrific shot of his own.

The Hurricanes jumped out to the lead again in the second period as Evgeny Kunetsov rifled a wrister short-side on Anton Forsberg, but once again, the Senators held pace with Tim Stutzle dazzling on a tremendous solo effort.

But just like he did last night, Seth Jarvis delivered a big goal in the dying seconds of the second period as the youngster put home a wicked Sebastian Aho feed — the Finnish center had three apples on the night — as the middle frame came to a close.

After that, Carolina proceeded to kick in the Senators teeth with a dominant four-goal performance all in less than a 10-minute span within the final frame.

Chatfield kicked it off with his tally skating into a shot from the slot, minutes later Orlov hammered a shot off the post and in, then Jake Guentzel was sprung on a partial breakaway for his first as a Hurricane and then Brendan Lemieux capped it off with a tip out in front on a Brent Burns shot.

It was yet another good night for special teams too as the power play went 1-for-3 and the penalty kill went a perfect 2-for-2.

Carolina will finish off their mini road trip with a stop on Long Island to face the New York Islanders on Tuesday.
