The Carolina Hurricanes ran the Ottawa Senators out of their own building Sunday night with a 7-2 throttling.
Dmitry Orlov led the way for the Canes with a two goal, four point night and Evgeny Kuznetsov, Seth Jarvis, Jalen Chatfield, Jake Guentzel and Brendan Lemieux also lit the lamp for Carolina.
Frederik Andersen stopped 30 of 32 in the win.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Orlov and Andersen spoke with the media in Ottawa. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On the blueline's offensive outpouring: It was an interesting game that way. I thought it was a pretty tight game. It wasn't a 7-2 game. It was a lot tighter than that, but Freddie [Andersen] played good. Made some big saves and then our blueline really took over and found ways to get pucks to the net and obviously had some pretty good shots. I don't want to say we took over the game, but that was the difference.
On the Dmitry Orlov and Jalen Chatfield pairing: They were solid. [Orlov's] been playing really well and he's got a heavy shot. Tonight we were able to see that. He's been coming along and really hasn't gotten any breaks. He's had a lot of really good opportunities and hopefully this springboards him because he has been playing well.
On the immediate impacts Jake Guentzel and Evgeny Kuznetsov have made: It's probably more crucial for them. We all know they're good players, but they want to contribute and that's what they've done since stepping into the lineup. [Kuznetsov] got another one tonight and [Guentzel] got a nice one. That's they way you fit in and that's the way you feel good about coming to a new team.
On if his team outlasted the Senators: I don't know if that's what I would say. I just think we were able to capitalize. All of sudden we got those chances and boom, they're in the net. That's deflating for the other team and then we were just able to sit on top of it and finish out the game. But I think it was more about us being able to capitalize on our opportunities.
On the team picking up wins despite a tough week: The guys are playing hard. Even the game we lost, we probably could have easily won that one too. We played really well in that one. So they're playing hard and that's all you can ask. It's a tough grind here right now and everybody has it. This last month for whatever reason, they stack the games and just pile them in there. It's a mental grind as well as a physical grind and I think so far our guys have really dug in.
Dmitry Orlov
On the game: Overall we had a pretty good game. It wasn't easy and we had a tough game yesterday coming back. Today, you could see in the locker room, everybody was tired, but we knew we had to come up and play strong and leave everything in their end. I think we did. Had a lot of good PKs and stuff. Freddie made some good saves and obviously I think we had good possession and offensive zone time. We created a lot of chances and scored a lot of goals.
On outlasting the Senators: I think we didn't make a lot of mistakes in the third . We just put the puck deep and tried to forecheck. It's our strength as a team and when we got the puck we just got open for each other and if you have a chance to shoot, you shoot it and somebody should be in front of the net. I think today we did a much better job in front of the net. Sometimes we kind of let the other team's goalie see the puck. So I think we still need to work on that.
On what was working offensively for himself: I tried to play both. Offense if I have a chance to jump in the play or move in the offensive zone. Just try to read the play. When we're in the d-zone, play hard and get quicker to the guys and make sure they're not circling around because it can be hard to defend. Overall I think it was a very good game.
Frederik Andersen
On the game: Two good, skilled teams going back and forth. It took till the third to really set us apart, but I thought we played really well and played hard throughout the game. You start seeing it on the scoreboard in the third, but there were good plays by both teams in the first two periods to get the scoring going and we stuck with it and got rewarded.
On Seth Jarvis' goal being a catalyst for the team: It was a positive, but we still believe that if we just continue to play our game then we'll get rewarded at the end. If it comes with a few seconds left in the second or at some point in the third, our goal it to keep grinding the same way and eventually get rewarded.
On the blueline: I think we have really, really good skaters to start which creates a lot of space and a lot of confusion in their zone if you can be moving a lot up top and be a threat as well. They're using their skating ability to defend as well and making it hard on the opponent to create plays because we're right on them. I think that's huge for us.
On the team rounding into form: I think we always try to play our game. Control the puck up in their end and usually that leads to less time in our end if we can do that well. I think we have a lot of skill and a lot of smart players that can kind of keep that rolling and make it tough for their team to have enough energy to generate something once they're finally out of the zone, so I think that's kind of our mindset to keep wearing teams down and get rewarded eventually.
