The Carolina Hurricanes boat raced the Calgary Flames Sunday evening, beating them 7-2 at PNC Arena.
The Canes had seven different goal scorers and Frederik Andersen stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Andrei Svechnikov, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Jalen Chatfield spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On the room being energized by the new additions: There's no doubt that the guys are pretty excited with the additions, that's for sure. I don't know if it had anything to do with what happened on the ice. You can tell the talent [Kuznetsov] has. It's evident. Glad he's on our team. He's one of those. And it's always like that when you played against him too. He has a little bit of energy too and it's showing.
On staying focused in a blowout game: It's tough. Listen, you know the other team is going to be going for it and they're taking chances. It is kind of what it is. A little bit of a sloppy period, but the game to me was the first period. That's where we came ready to play and we took the game there, I think.
On the passing on display today: We had some good plays. A lot of the time your overpass, and you'll say that when it doesn't go in, but there's a difference to me. If the passes are there as opposed to when you're forcing them. That's kind of when you get a little bit frustrated with it. But overall, a solid game and especially on a back-to-back. They had a back-to-back too and you could see they were a little sluggish if you ask them.
On if he thinks it's important to win the Metropolitan Division: You want to win every game and if we get first, that's great, but it's about getting in there. It doesn't matter who you end up playing, it's going to be a solid team. So we have to get there first. However it works out. We know the race isn't done yet, we have to get there and then we'll figure the rest out.
On his top performer: I think in the first period, [Sebastian Aho] made a couple of really nice plays. That's the whole key. When you can get out front, the other team has to do things a little differently and I think that's why you saw those odd-man rushes because they were trying to really up there game and take more chances. We were able to capitalize on those. To me, that's where the game was won.
On Jalen Chatfield scoring and breaking up a potential breakaway: They're both equally as important. For him, he'd probably say the goal, but taking one off the board is just as important.
On his team not getting calls: I don't know what to tell you. Something's not right because just by chance you should at least be even. When you dominate a game like that... It's kind of shocking. I'd like to know what it's been all year. It's you get one, they get two. You get four and they get five. That's a stress. You don't realize how much extra stress that is in a game when you have to kill an extra penalty because that's two or three chances against that are going to come down your throat and could change the game. I don't really know why it's happening. Who knows.
On the acquisitions reminding him of the 2006 team: It's still too early because we haven't even added Jake [Guentzel] yet, so we'll see. But potentially. It makes our team better, that's for sure, when you add that kind of skill level. Now it's just a matter of the fit. We have to make sure everyone fits right and those guys have to know what we're doing. [Kuznetsov] is such a good player that he's getting by on the talent. Right now, he doesn't have a great feel of how we want it to be done, so that's still coming.
On Frederik Andersen: We knew that was something that was on the horizon. We know that position is it. You've got to have it. So getting him back in the mix, we're essentially adding three pieces into the mix at the same time. If it all comes together, that's pretty good.
Andrei Svechnikov
On the team's passing: It just felt so confident. [Kuznetsov] has been helping a lot on the second line. They've been just dominating every shift and whenever you see that, you kind of want to do that too. That was kind of it to be honest. We just kind of controlled the game and that was perfect.
On playing with Kuznetsov: I think think it was only one shift, but it was great. A think we could have scored a couple of goals there, but it didn't happen. Just can't wait for when he scores and it's going to be pretty exciting.
On the new additions energizing the team: That's definitely right. Just kind of new energy and with what kind of players they are, some of the best in the league. It's always exciting and we can't wait to play more games.
On continuing to play hard even when the score kept increasing: We just kept rolling and playing our game. That's what we should have done the game against Winnipeg, but we just played our game.
Evgeny Kuznetsov
On playing at PNC Arena: That was a good emotion when they cheer for me. It's one of those that gives you extra energy and you know, this building is actually not bad when you play on the other side. It's a fun place and it was a big game for us. It was a fun atmosphere. My wife and kids were here so I gotta talk to them about if they liked it or not, but I feel like they enjoyed the game
On what he's learned about his new team: There's a lot of good things. A lot of things are new for me and like I said three days ago, my job is just to not make things worse. Just to fill in and understand the roles and everything and bring something special. I felt like so far, we've been moving the puck pretty well and that's how it is. That's how it's supposed to be. Hockey's supposed to be fun and sometimes you do have to dump the puck deep and work, but when it's time to make plays, you gotta make plays and play hockey.
On nearly scoring: It's one of those things like I said, I want to learn and I want to get my legs back and just make passes, plays, work hard and do all those right things. The points will come. I'm in a position where a win means more for me or [Martin Necas] got 5-6 chances, [Stefan Noesen] got a few chances. That's where I fit in. It's more than just points for me.
On playing with Martin Necas: The more goals he gets, the more dollars he's going to get at the end of the year, so that's the answer.
Jalen Chatfield
On scoring: We really want to shoot a lot of pucks, especially when we have the lane, so it was a good pass and my job is just to fire it on net. That was it.
On which he liked better, scoring or breaking up a potential breakaway: I mean, it don't matter. Just helping the team win. Playing both sides of the ice. I think that's key.
On having a game where they score a ton: For sure it's nice to be on the other side. We've had games, I can remember even last year, with 50+ [shots] and we only got one [goal]. If we keep shooting the puck, I believe good things are gonna happen like what happened tonight.
On staying locked in when leading by so much: I think it's important for us to stay focused because we have more games to play. We don't want to start any bad habits, so we want to finish the game the right way and I think we did a good job of that which will help us move into the next game.
On the new guys energizing the room: For sure. I feel the energy in the room. The trade deadline, it's a big part of the year and to pick up those two guys is huge for our team. There's a lot of energy from it.
On Kuznetsov: Great. Everything the hype has been. He can move the puck and he really wants to win, so it's huge.
