The Carolina Hurricanes stood on business Thursday night, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 4-0 Thursday night at PNC Arena.
Frederik Andersen stopped 24 shots for his second shutout of the season and Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Martin Necas and Brady Skjei all scored for Carolina.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Jarvis, Aho and Andersen spoke with the media in Raleigh. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On the game: The first period was great. We didn't get rewarded, but I thought it se the tone for the game. It was a positive period and I think we were able to carry it over a little bit and then we got rewarded in the second period. It wasn't as good of a period, but we got rewarded for what we did in the first period.
On if he's surprised by how fast the top line has clicked: Not necessarily. You put three quality, quality players together that think the game the right way, you have a chance to see what we're seeing right now. You obviously hope it continues, but it's definitely been a good start for those guys.
On being able to rotate goalies: [Andersen] came back after that long layoff, so you certainly weren't going to overwork him. I think even still, he's still getting into a rhythm to catch up. But he's done everything you could ask. I think it's been good because we've had a lot of games, so even though we're rotating, he's getting a couple starts a week. So it's been good.
On Evgeny Kuznetsov: That's another guy that's still trying to catch up. He was out for a long time as well and maybe that was starting to catch up to him a little bit. I think it has a little, but he has that [passing] ability. That's the key. If we can just get him the puck in that zone, he's creative and can make things happen.
On clinching a playoff berth: It's kind of almost unfortunate that it gets overlooked a little because of where we sit. You forget how hard that is to accomplish and to do that with however many games left. I didn't even think about it because it's been such a foregone conclusion, but that's impressive and these guys deserve credit for that because the only reason you can do that is because of what they've done in the first five months of the season. Being ready to play ever night and doing it over and over and over. It's a huge accomplishment. I wish I would have... I didn't even think about it. I should have mentioned it to the guys after the game because it is a big deal. That's what we set out to do in September. You have to get this part of the race finished. You have to make sure you can do this before you even get to that other part and we did that tonight.
On concerns with keeping the team motivated through the remainder of the regular season: No. Because guys probably don't even know. They're real pros and they now to come ready to play. That's their job first and foremost. Where it all ends up in the last x amount of games we have left is what it is. But I don't think we're going to have a problem with being ready to play ever. That's really never been a problem with this group.
On if he feels a personal sense of accomplishment for turning the franchise around: First of all, it's not about me. This was done with the change in leadership at the top with Tom [Dundon] saying, 'Okay, we're going to have a fair fight,' and then the guys we already had in here in place, these core guys, they just do it right and it's just infectious. It's a pleasure to be around them, to be honest. Nobody wants to hear that, but that's the facts.
On the core guys: These are the guys we're talking about. That had been here through the whole thing and were part of the reason for the turnaround and then we added the pieces and the young kids coming up, that are now not even young anymore, that get it. Again, these are the guys that deserve all the credit and we still have a lot of work to do.
Seth Jarvis
On controlling the game: That's what we want to do every night. We want to control the game and spark energy for our team and shut down the other team as well. I think we did a good job in the second period. We really turned it up and I think that sort of jump started the team.
On his chemistry with Jake Guentzel and Sebastian Aho: It's been pretty cool. It's been great to play with two really high-end players, so it's been fun to play with them, hang out with them and I think only better things will come.
On Frederik Andersen: I expected him to be this good. He shuts me down a lot in practice. He's been unbelievable. It's great to see him back and playing and just enjoying being around. Everyone missed him in the locker room and hanging around everybody. To have him back in here with us and to see him everyday and the way he's playing is just awesome.
On the scoring outburst in the second: Momentum is huge so when you score like that you kind of kick it off. You just want to get the next one or make sure at least, that they don't get one quick to kind of stunt everything, We did a good job of just sticking with it for the most part and making sure they couldn't come back.
On clinching a playoff berth: We've heard from all the guys that have been here a lot longer than me, what it was like before so we don't to ever go back to that. I think we've done a good job of cementing ourselves as a top team in this league. Making the playoffs is one thing, but we have a bigger goal in mind. It's a good start, but there's a lot of stuff to take care of.
Sebastian Aho
On tying his career high in points: I obviously get to play with great players and play high minutes and on the power play and all that so I expect myself to produce. It's always nice to score goals and get points and they're big, but I try to look at my game a little differently. How am I in all three zones and am I on it? Tonight was a good game and that's why we were able to get those scoring chances .
On playing with Jake Guentzel: He's an elite player so it comes pretty naturally. He plays the game pretty much the same way that I do and he plays with a high-pace. He can skate and he does it all, but he also thinks fast. He's just a great player to play with
On matching Detroit's intensity: It was a good start. Obviously you hope to get that every night, but especially after last game, we didn't like our start. So it was a good response by us and that's the way we have to approach every game.
Frederik Andersen
On the team's start: We started out really hot. So it was good by them. Came ready to play and we didn't really get rewarded in the first period, but obviously we did in the second. Got a nice lead and we hung onto it.
On if there's any difficulty to not seeing a shot for half a period: I try not to think about shots against or anything. I just play the situation and try not to think about anything that isn't in front of me.
On where his confidence is at: It's good. I just try play each moment and try to be focused on that. That's really all I can talk about. Just have a good foundation. Have that intensity when you need it and be calm when you need to.
On if he feels like he is 100% back: I feel fine. I feel like I'm just excited to play. That's the biggest thing. I'm just enjoying playing. Having a lot of fun being in the room with the guys. Seeing the guys again means a lot so obviously it's been a ton of fun.
