Sebastian Aho’s three-point night and Taylor Hall’s clutch finishing propelled Carolina past Montreal, overcoming a penalty-filled battle as the Hurricanes’ leaders dominated an electric Centre Bell atmosphere.
The Carolina Hurricanes picked up their second win in a row, defeating the Montreal Canadiens 6-4 Tuesday night at Centre Bell.
Sebastian Aho led the way for the Hurricanes with his second straight three-point game and Taylor Hall scored twice, including the eventual game-winner.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour, along with Aho and Hall spoke with the media in Montreal. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On the game: I really liked the first two periods. I thought we were really good. Didn't give up much, killed a couple of 5-on-3s, like we were doing the hard work there and I really thought we were in control of the game for the most part. The third period was probably the one I didn't like the most because we started turning pucks over and just not being super sharp. But we had enough of a lead that we were able to get it done.
On special teams: Well, the penalty kill was really sharp. The power play could be better. It's cashing in, nice play by [Nikolaj Ehlers] there to [Sebastian Aho], but that's the game now. For whatever reason, it feels like the start of the year, they call a lot of weird penalties. Just calling everything. So you have to be prepared for that and they were tonight.
On Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov: Your top guys have to be top guys. Fishy has been really good and very competitive. It's nice to see him get rewarded for that work. The leaders have to lead and everyone has to do what they did tonight, which was contribute.
Sebastian Aho
On the game: It was a hard fought match. I thought both teams played pretty well. Obviously it felt like a lot happened in that game. A lot of penalties, a lot of goals, stuff like that, so just happy to get two points there. Obviously home opener for them, so they were full of energy and pushed hard, especially early. But we weathered the storm there and kind of took over at the end.
On special teams: The PK was unreal. [Jaccob Slavin], [Jalen Chatfield], [Jordan Staal], [Jordan Martinook], like those guys, especially on the 5-on-3, those guys were just so huge and gave us so much momentum. Obviously got the goal on the power play. Wasn't the prettiest. Wasn't too happy with the power play today, but obviously we scored a goal, so that was big. We'll take that.
On trying to take the home crowd out of it: That's how it happens naturally. This building gets loud and it's electric. Just a cool and unique atmosphere to play in. Once you can dictate the game and score some goals, naturally, it quiets down a little bit. That was kind of the goal in a way. We knew they were going to push hard early and they got a goal and a lead, but we just kept on pushing.
Taylor Hall
On the game: It was a weird game. A lot of power plays, a lot of 4-on-4, 5-on-3s and stuff like that. I thought the penalty kill was really good, obviously, and the power play got us one. Just kind of a game where you want to come out with a win because I don't think either side feels tremendous about their game, but it's a fun building to play in and we seem to do well here. We'll take the two points and get home.
On special teams: I think our PK is picking up where they left off in the playoffs. We were talking about it this morning, that was such an incredible run with what they did in the playoffs and that's a really good power play over there that has skill and they play well together. To keep them in check is awesome and we're going to need that. Our power play, I don't know if we're ever going to be like a 35% power play, but for us, just keep getting on the board and keep doing our thing and it's fun to watch.
On picking up the scoring on the road: Doesn't matter where the games are, we have to play our game and that's the thing. We play the same every game no matter where it is. We can play on the road, play at home. We're 2-1-1, so we're going to keep building.
