The Carolina Hurricanes demolished the Boston Bruins in a 8-2 Halloween thriller Thursday night at Lenovo Center.
The Canes had goals by Andrei Svechnikov (x2), Jack Roslovic (x2), Dmitry Orlov, Martin Necas, Sean Walker and Jesperi Kotkaniemi in the win.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Svechnikov, Roslovic and Necas spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On how the game could have very easily turned in the first period with the multiple penalties: I thought we were good right from the start of the game. But yeah, that little sequence there wasn't the best, but we killed it for the most part and then got right back on it. So I give the guys a lot of credit.
On what's been going so well for Jack Roslovic: You know, I don't know. It's strange. He's fast and he's got a great release like you saw tonight. Obviously it's been a great fit here so far. Sometimes you just... I don't even know how to explain it, but a new change of scenery, a fresh start. Sometimes that's what you need.
On the penalty kill: Like you mentioned, it could have changed the whole complexion if they get another one there, so that was huge. They got one on the 5-on-3 but then we were able to kill the next one. That was probably the game right there in those three, four, five minutes that we were able to get through it at least not down.
On his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty: I always have a little issue when you're already down [and a penalty is called]. It's gotta be a real penalty to go down 5-on-3. You're just giving them a goal and I thought it was a pretty light penalty. Normally, you know all the officials and we [Frederick L'Ecuyer] have a pretty good rapport and we go back and forth and then he usually comes over and gives you a warning. In my tenure with him, he's always given me a warning and then I know he's let me have my vent. He just didn't give me my warning. That's what happened.
On Jordan Martinook's play setting up the team's sixth goal: It kind of epitomizes how he plays. It's just every shift that's like that. They got rewarded and that's really what happened to get the assist. But I mean, he does it every shift like that. Nice to see him get rewarded for his efforts because a lot of the time it goes unnoticed. Sometimes that player, you don't talk enough about.
On Andrei Svechnikov at the net front on the power play: He can kind of go wherever you put him. He's got the great hands, quick hands so you'd hope that would translate around the net and obviously it did tonight.
Andrei Svechnikov
On the first period: I think we got a few penalties and those are kinds of things that happen. You just try to stay focused. Obviously it's 3-on-5, but the boys did an amazing job and we just stuck with the game.
On staying focused through the penalty kills: For sure, for sure, but especially for those guys who don't play on the penalty kill getting cold legs and all that stuff. But I think we did a great job with that.
On what Rod Brind'Amour said to get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty: Nothing. Nothing. Nothing really, but it just happens. We all get emotional, but I think he was definitely right on that.
On being net front on the power play: I don't really care where I play on the power play. I've said it many times. Half-wall, middle or in front of the net. But it's been good. We've moved the puck very well and tried to look for each other. Just tried to put the puck in the net. We've gotten some chemistry and hopefully we'll keep going.
On the mentality in a game like tonight: Obviously we need to save some goals for the next game, but yeah, the mentality [is to just keep shooting], to be honest. That's our game. We love to shoot the puck and put the puck in the net.
On Jack Roslovic: He's such a skilled guy and he always sees you and it's fun to play with him. He always has speed in the neutral zone and he's always trying to look for you as well.
Jack Roslovic
On the first period: That was a by-committee kill. A great kill and we were bailed out by them. It was great. Obviously a couple of 5-on-3s could have gone the other way but we just stuck with it.
On his scoring streak: Obviously when you can score, it's great to add that value to the team.
On what's been going well for him: I think it's just the style of play. Like I've said from the beginning, it fits me a little bit so I enjoy playing in the system and I enjoy being at the rink every day. The guys are a special group and it's been easy, fun and we're just going to keep on grinding.
On the benefit of the early road trip: It's impressive too. Usually if you go on a road trip and go 5-1, maybe it's a little hard to refocus with the whole time change and everything, but it's amazing how we showed up to the rink today. Battled a little bit of adversity in the first and then kind of just took off.
Martin Necas
On the first period: You can see how huge special teams are. They scored one lucky one on the 5-on-3, but other than that, it was some great kills and then we scored three on the power play, so that's huge and a game changer. That's something we paid attention to all kind of preseason and worked on a lot. Just happy that it's working.
On the power play success: I think we're trying to get to the net, we're winning faceoffs, getting good breakouts and just kind of feel comfortable there. You're gaining confidence there. We're all good players and we're trying to make plays and stuff happens.
