After being placed on the Hurricanes injured non-roster last week on October 7th, the Hurricanes have placed Defenseman Joakim Ryan on waivers today, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Ryan, 31, has been away from the team since October 3rd when he was sidelined with what was reported as a "undisclosed' injury.
Four days later on October 7th, Ryan was placed on the teams injured non-roster where he remained until today, prior to being placed on waivers.
The move likely signals that Ryan is healthy and ready to return to action, where the Hurricanes will hopefully have him clear waivers and he can join their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.
The Hurricanes signed Ryan this past July 14th to a one-year, two-way contract, carrying a cap hit of $775k at the NHL level and $110,000 in the AHL. Ryan played 4 games for Hurricanes back in the 2020-2021 season, as the familiarity Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky had with him likely playing a key part in bringing Ryan back into the fold.
“We are glad to have Joakim back in Carolina after his time here in 2020-21,” said Tulsky. “His veteran leadership and experience at the highest levels will be a great asset to our organization.”
Ryan has played in a total of 145 career NHL games with the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and the Hurricanes, tallying 4 goals, 20 assists and 24 points.
Ryan had spent the last 3 years of career playing for the Malmo Redhawks of the SweHL prior to returning to North America to join the Hurricanes.
