© Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports - Aho, Martinook, Brind'Amour on Loss in Florida: "We didn't have everybody on board"

The Carolina Hurricanes lost 5-2 Friday night to the Florida Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena.

Game Recap: Disappointing Effort Sinks Canes in Sunrise

It was obvious the team was frustrated with their performance as head coach Rod Brind'Amour and members of the leadership team calling out the group.

Here's what they had to say:

    Rod Brind'Amour

On his takeaways: They were good, we were bad and that combination's not good. That's not going to work. You've gotta give them credit. I thought they played exactly like they wanted to and we never had anything. Nothing got going. We had the power play in the third where maybe we could get something going and then we take a penalty. I know it wasn't a penalty, but that just kind of blew the game out for us. Not a good game.

On getting everybody pulling in the same direction: What it is is that we have to remember what makes us successful as a group. We've gotta put the work boots on. Right now, we're not really doing that enough. We did it in spurts this year, but if you've watched us over the last five years, it's every night and right now, it's not. We're not quite there. It just leads to one thing and then another. Not a good result. It starts with that.

On building consistency: You've gotta win your battles. You've gotta understand that it's going to be hard. Simple. We've got guys that right now thinking that... It's a hard game to try to look for a little bit of an easy way. That's never going to happen. Good news is that we get to try again tomorrow.

On coming in looking for revenge for last season: I don't give a crap about last year. That has nothing to do with tonight. We're trying to get even any kind of semblance for a season going. I don't worry about last year.

On finding a consistent 5v5 offensive game: We've gotta be better. That's all. Our top guys weren't very good tonight and you're not going to win if they're not consistently at least matching the other team's top guys. You watch those top guys, they were all over it. I don't know where our top guys were. That's part of it.

    Sebastian Aho

On struggling at 5v5: I thought that they were better in every area. It starts with the compete level. Up and down through the lineup we've gotta be a little better. Sometimes intention might be there, but execution is not in puck battles or getting pucks out or in. I felt like a lot of times those crucial 50/50s went there way. We've gotta be better. They got momentum off of it and we spent way too much time in our own zone.

On getting everybody on the same page: I think it's more individually. You've gotta be willing to prepare for every night and take a lot of pride in that. Especially early in the game, they were better in the 50/50 puck battles. A lot goes into that. Just preparation. Gotta be better.

On motivation going into the third: We're a confident group. It's not anything like that, but obviously it didn't go our way. I think we've gotta be better earlier in the game.

On what to do differently tomorrow: That's the beauty of the league. There's a lot of games and they come quick. Obviously tomorrow night is a big test against a very good team again. I'd hope to see us get a good start and have a full, complete effort throughout the game. They defend well and it's not always going to go our way offensively. Just doing the details the right way and playing the game the right way. That's the main goal for tomorrow.

    Jordan Martinook

On his takeaways from the game: We just talked about it. We didn't have everybody on board. I feel like, for the most part, we were off. Our whole group was just off. It's disappointing because that's the team that ended our season last year and you want to come out and show something. Show that it hurt you last year. We didn't do enough to win that game.

On getting everybody to pull the rope: I wish I could tell you because you look at some games that we play and it's just line after line. It's rolling them over like how this team has looked for six years since I've been here. And then other games, we're late here, we're late there, we're not engaged here and it looks like that. It's a lot more fun after a game when you win. The success that we've had has been playing the way we've set the standard here for years. When we get away from it it looks like that and for the most part, you don't come out on the right side of it.

On forechecking: We definitely didn't have enough forechecking shifts. Even in the third period, when you're pushing to tie the game, we just didn't have anything. You've gotta credit them. Every puck that they got in their zone it was just out and then they're getting it in and putting pressure on us and then we're late here or make a mistake here and that ends up being the game. When we needed a push, we didn't have any push and that's a little concerning.

On the key to success at 5v5: I think it doesn't matter who you put on the ice, it usually looks the same way with this team. You have the top guys competing, working hard and it just trickles down. I'm not saying that our top guys haven't been doing that or that our bottom guys haven't been doing that, but when we're on, it's because everybody is competing, everybody is working. Everything starts with work with this team and I just don't think our work ethic was where it needed to be tonight.
