The Carolina Hurricanes drafted Russian forward Alexander Rykov with the 100th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

The winger had 4 goals and 11 points in 20 games in the VHL last season, the highest points-per-game by a U-18 player in VHL history.

Rykov, through a translator, spoke with the media in Nashville following his selection.

Here's what he had to say:

*The following dialogue has been slightly edited for clarity

On how he would describe his game: I’m a two-way forward. I can play in the defensive and offensive zone. I can score or I can pass. I can do everything in the defensive zone that I need to for the team.

On if he's familiar with the Carolina Hurricanes: I’ve watched their highlights. I’m a fan of Andrei Svechnikov and I’m trying to play the same style as him.

On his feelings being drafted: It’s a big moment in my life. I’m proud to be here at the draft and I’m glad to be selected.”

On what his future plans are: I have two years left on my contract [with Traktor Chelyabinsk] and when it’s over I’m going to try and come to Carolina.

On his favorite player growing up: My childhood favorite is Alex Ovechkin. I wear the same number, 8, as him.
