The Carolina Hurricanes are hot right now.
After a 6-1 win over the New York Rangers Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, the Hurricanes have now won four in a row coming out of the holiday break and sit just five points behind the Blueshirts for first place in the division.
Andrei Svechnikov led the way for Carolina with two goals while Jack Drury, Jordan Martinook, Jalen Chatfield and Michael Bunting all picked up tallies.
Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 28-of-29 in the win.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Svechnikov, Brady Skjei and Drury spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On 5v5 play improving as the game went along: I thought the third period was probably our better period. Obviously it was a big kill coming out of the break and then got a big goal right at the end of the kill to I think put the game away. We made some good individual efforts the rest of the way, but [Kochetkov] was really good, kept us in the game early, and we were fortunate. Scored on pretty much every scoring chance we had which never really happens when we come here. That was nice.
On special teams: I think we were good early, had a good plan and then kind of got away the last couple when the game got a little out of hand. We got off it a little, but I think just in general, we've certainly come together as a group in that department and obviously it helps the penalty kill when our goalie is making some big saves to right the ship for us. It's been a good stretch.
On Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov: Well, you've got great players there and they're kind of getting rewarded really. I don't really see that they've done anything differently if you watched our games all year, it's just that right now... I mean that last goal was a great individual effort by Svech. He's getting the puck to go in which is great. We need that. And [Aho] it's the same thing. He's always around the net and making plays. Just lately they've been going in. Obviously great to see.
On if he's looking at the standings yet: Not really. That's a pretty big gap with games in hand and everything. We've just got to keep plugging along. We'll see where we are at the end of the year. We're taking it a day at a time.
Andrei Svechnikov
On the power play: We played perfect tonight . Felt pretty good and the power play has been huge in our last five or ten games. Obviously it gives you confidence whenever you score first and we just rolled from there.
On the third period mentality: Just stay above them and just try to score goals as well. Not to sit back, but to try to create something and obviously stay above them because we know how they can play. They can score from anywhere.
On Jack Drury: He's finding his game. Solid play. It's really good to see him score. It's really exciting.
On Pyotr Kochetkov: He's been amazing. I feel like every game he gets more confident and he's just been better and better, to be honest. He's already elite so it's exciting to see him being huge for us.
Brady Skjei
On his production and the win: It feels good. Obviously a got pretty lucky on a couple of them, but good plays by the guys. For the win, it's a huge one. A team that's at the top of the league right now and a team that's been red hot since the start. So it was a big win for us.
On if he's started to look at the standings: We always say we take it one day at a time here. Obviously, we know where everyone is in the standings, but just trying to take it one game at a time. If we keep winning , hopefully we'll catch them.
On the power play's success: I think we're confident, we're shooting the puck. We have some elite guys that can score. They're obviously doing their job right now and they've been really good for us the last month or so.
On Pyotr Kochetkov: He's been huge. Like we always say, we always have confidence in our goalies, but he's been playing phenomenally lately. Just looks calm back there, not giving up too many rebounds and as a defenseman, that's really nice.
On Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov: They've been dominant. I don't think there's anyway else to put it. They've been our best players and have been just on fire the last week or so. It's fun to watch and I just try to get them the puck.
Jack Drury
On the 5v5 play: The third period was good. I think the second still was a little shaky, but the third was good. So a good finish.
On the power play's success: It's huge. I think we've got a lot of talent on it, so it's just about execution and it's good to see that happen.
On his goal: We have a lot of good players on the unit so good poise by Necas. Skjei made a great play down to Noesen and like he's always done, Noesen found me. Fortunate to get a lot of good passes and put them in the back of the net.
On the effort: Obviously [Kochetkov] was huge, so I think a lot of credit goes to him. He's been unbelievable for us and then special teams was big and did a good job finishing it off in the third.
