The Carolina Hurricanes today claimed goaltender Spencer Martin off of waivers.
Martin, 28, had been with the Columbus Blue Jackets after being originally claimed off of waivers from the Vancouver Canucks at the start of the season.
This year, Martin has a 3-8-1 record with a 0.887 save percentage and 3.65 GAA.
According to moneypuck.com, Martin also has saved -4.7 goals above expected on the season.
Across his career, Martin has played in 51 games at the NHL level with a 17-25-6 record and a 0.886 save percentage.
This isn't a move to stabilize the net but rather to provide a temporary bandaid while Pyotr Kochetkov is sidelined.
Currently the only goalies Carolina has who are both healthy and under contract are Antti Raanta and Yaniv Perets, who was playing in the ECHL just a week earlier.
Adding Martin just gives them the necessary depth they need should another injury occur because teams have to carry at least two netminders at all times per NHL rules.
And once things settle back down, they can just waive him again if need be because his $775,000 cap hit (he's in the last year of his deal as well) can be fully buried in the minors.
