It was a gutsy win for the Carolina Hurricanes, who went on the road and defeated the Boston Bruins 3-2 at TD Gardens.
To make it even more special, the win came in front of their moms as the team was holding its Moms Trip.
Martin Necas, Teuvo Teravainen and Jordan Martinook scored in the win while Spencer Martin stopped 25 of 27 in his first career start with his new team.
Period 1
It was a hard-fought, back and forth period between two good teams.
Early on, the Hurricanes had some difficulty clearing the zone and getting established in the Bruins' zone.
They also had to kill the games first penalty.
But they got the kill, and once they got that forecheck going, things started to fall into place for Carolina. A big factor that was noticeable was how much of a focus the Canes had on getting traffic in front of the net.
It also helped that Spencer Martin settled in nicely for his first start with his new team.
Then, with a late period penalty, Martin Necas gave his team the lead, scoring in a third consecutive game.
Similar to how he scored in Detroit, Necas cuts to the middle of the ice and thanks to a great screen by Stefan Noesen, beats Linus Ullmark clean.
Period 2
Just a completely clinical period by the Canes.
Carolina forechecked the Bruins into submission, outchancing them 20-7 and even with having to kill two penalties, they still hardly gave up anything.
And yet again, even when they did give up chances, Martin was up to the test.
The Hurricanes just forechecked relentlessly and eventually drew another penalty.
The top unit maintained possession for over a minute and a half of power play time, simply just outworking Boston to pucks and eventually, Teuvo Teravainen found a loose puck and, with his stick between Charlie Coyle's legs, chipped it past Ullmark.
Period 3
The Bruins came out of the gate hot and after an extended shift, a defensive breakdown ended with Brad Marchand popping home a feed on the backdoor to get his team on the board.
The pressure didn't alleviate from there as Boston continued to push Carolina back on its heels.
Then with a rush starting from their defensive zone, the Bruins stormed down the ice and while Martin made the initial save in front, the Canes' forwards didn't provide enough support and Marchand banged home his second off the rebound.
Boston grabbed a late power play as Dmitry Orlov was called for a hold, and the Canes had a crucial moment.
It wasn't pretty as Seth Jarvis was without a stick for 30 seconds and it felt like the team couldn't get any deep clears, but they bent but didn't break and coming out of the kill, the Canes struck back.
Jordan "Offensive Dynamo" Martinook was sprung on a breakaway and his shot just slipped enough through Ullmark to find its way in, Martinook's fifth goal in his last six games, and give Carolina a late lead.
Boston immediately lifted Ullmark for the extra attacker, but the Canes managed to bear down and skate to victory.
Martin stopped 25 of 27 in the win.
