The Carolina Hurricanes scored three unanswered goals Saturday night to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena.
Playing on the second half of a back-to-back, the Hurricanes got better as the game went on led by Spencer Martin in net who stopped 29 of 30.
Andrei Svechnikov, Seth Jarvis and Stefan Noesen also all scored for Carolina.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Jarvis and Martin spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On the difference in the third period: Well we capitalized. Jarvis had a heck of an individual effort and then they were pushing a little bit and we were able to capitalize on an odd-man rush. Nice play by Noesen to knock it down and tap it in. And then when you get ahead by a couple, you're in good shape. I mean, Spencer Martin was the difference. Kept us in it in the first period when we were not very good. I thought they were really good and playing their game and he gave us a chance.
On Spencer Martin: He's certainly calm and listen, he's done the job. That's plain and simple. He was the reason we won tonight. Good on him and he's been great helping us out. Been a great addition.
On the penalty kill's success: They're in sync and they certainly work hard. It helps to be on the same page and really dialed in. They take a lot of pride in that. The guys certainly understand how important it is, especially lately. It's the game. The games are tight and we're not getting a lot of power plays so we gotta kill these, so we've done a real nice job of that.
On his takeaways from the road trip as a whole: Funny, maybe the best game we played we lost. Just how hockey works sometimes. In Dallas, I thought we were really good and got nothing out of it. Tonight was probably our worst game, but the other team had a lot to do with it. They definitely played their game and we were on our heels for the majority of the game, but like I said, we capitalized.
Seth Jarvis
On the overall 5v5 game: It was alright. We still gave them a lot of opportunities, especially in the first [Martin] played unbelievable. He kept us in there. He had a lot of tough chances to defend and he did a great job. In the third, we played better. The second was better too, but in the first, without him, that could have been a whole different game.
On his goal: I just saw it coming around the boards. I knew [Staal] was going to make some kind of play on it and he made a great one. I saw a bouncing puck so there's no point to me not trying to go and get it. I got a good bounce this time and it was just about using my speed. I almost fell going to the net, but I was able to keep it together and make a move and luckily it went in.
On the penalty kill's success: A lot of pressure. We've been hounding them, making them make plays quick and I think good power plays, when they have time, is when they burn you. So being able to be in their face as much as possible makes it a little more uncomfortable.
On his goal being a demoralizer for Vegas: Any penalty kill goal always does and it build momentum for our team. But there were so many other opportunities but [Martin] just made big saves, a couple of blocked shots. But yeah, that goal was nice.
On how he feels the team is playing as of late: Good. Coming off of a back-to-back is always tough, especially coming into this building and going against a really good team. I'm really proud of how we came out and how hard we worked. That was basically what got us through that game: our effort and work.
Stefan Noesen
On the keys to the win: [Martin], obviously. He played really well. We needed him to come up with some big saves and he made them. The kill did really well as well. We had a couple of timely goals too. Jarvis' goal was a great individual effort there. It's nice to get those.
On the confidence the goaltending provides: It's huge. You just always know someone is going to be there to stop the puck when we have a breakdown. It allows us to stay aggressive in the system we like to play. Having a solid guy back there, it doesn't really matter who's in net, right now. They're kicking pretty good. Obviously we want to try and limit [the chances against] as much as possible, but when we need them, they've been there.
On his goal: Oh yeah, that was nice. Honestly, I just drove the net and the puck kind of went into the air and I knew I couldn't touch it and had to wait until it got towards the top of the crossbar. It was pretty close, but I was able to bat it down and bat it in. That's a tough challenge for them.
On the conversations heading into the second intermission: We have all the confidence in our PK. Our PK has been pretty good. I think we struggled a little bit at the start of the year, but we've really turned it around. I don't know where we're at exactly, but I'm sure we're pretty high up there. They've done an excellent job. [Tim Gleason] has them pretty dialed in. Us being down a man, sometimes it's just a kick starter for us.
