Andreas Athanasiou, who tied for the Blackhawks goal scoring lead with 20 in 2022-23, told reporters he wanted to re-sign with Chicago during the team's postseason media sessions in April.
Athanasiou had a goal and two assissts at Pittsburgh on April 13, his final game of the season. He got that wish on Thursday when the Blackhawks announced they'd come to terms on a two-year contract with the speedy 28-year-old forward. The deal has a $4.25 million annual salary cap hit.
Athanasiou's 20 goals tied for first on Chicago last season, his first with the Blackhawks after signing as a free agent in July 2022. He added 20 assists for 40 points to rank third in team scoring — and for his best output since 30 goals and 24 assists with Detroit in 2018-19
"I think this year I definitely grew a little bit," Athanasiou said. "I learned for sure and tried to get better,"
The Woodbridge, Ontario native finished strong, posting eight goals and 12 assists in the last 24 games. Athanasiou also showed versatility, playing at all three forward positions.
Athanasiou finished strong down the stretch, including a two-goal game at Calgary on April 4.Coach Luke Richardson said playing center might suit Athanasiou because of his speed, and ability help with coverage down low in the defensive zone.
"I enjoy playing center," Athanasiou said. "I think growing up that was kind of my natural position.
"The game kind of just flows a little better when I'm playing center," he added. "I guess it's just an opportunity to skate a little more and just move my feet a little more all over the ice."
Athanasiou also could be a fleet complement on the wing to presumptive No. 1 2023 NHL draft pick Connor Bedard.
Athanasiou's contract length and terms seem to fit with general manager Kyle Davidson's plans to preserve long-term flexibility and cap space.
If Athanasiou skates out the next two years in Chicago, it would his longest stop in the NHL since playing parts of four seasons with the Red Wings to start his career. He was drafted in the fourth round, 110th overall by Detroit in 2012 and made his NHL debut in Nov. 8, 2015 as a 21-year-old.
