NHL Rookie of the Month takes seven shots on goal, attempts four more at Detroit.

Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson wanted NHL rookie scoring leader Connor Bedard to start shooting, even more.

The 18-year-old center complied, firing off seven shots on goal and attempting four more that were blocked or missed the net in a 5-1 loss to the Red Wings in Detroit on Thursday.

Wings goalie Alex Lyon stopped all of Bedard's shots that got through. Lyon blocked 34 in all, allowing only a power-play goal to Lukas Reichel early in the first period.

Bedard set that one up with a quick pass from behind the net to Reichel in front.

Bedard was named NHL Rookie of the Month for November. He had six goals and 12 points in 12 games.

Bedard, the NHL's No. 1 draft pick last June, paces all first-year players with 10 goals and 18 points in 21 games. He also leads rookies in shots on goal with 65, four more than Adam Fantilli of Columbus.

J.T. Compher, from Chicago's north suburbs, and Robby Fabbri each scored twice to lead the Wings to their fourth win in five games. Detroit came out skating, moved the puck briskly and jumped on coverage mistakes and turnovers by Chicago's younger players.  See Richardson cover it in the video.

"I think we gave them their first three goals tonight," Richardson said. "So we were behind that 8-ball and just chasing uphill after that."

The Blackhawks outshot the Red Wings 35-29, but couldn't sustain pressure. Detroit had the better chances against Petr Mrazek, aided by odd-man rushes.

Former Blackhawks star Patrick Kane, who signed with Detroit as a free agent on Tuesday, is expected to make his Red Wings debut next week.
