Blackhawks forward Tyler Johnson was placed on injured reserve on Monday — and added to depleted Chicago's lengthy casualty list — with a right foot injury he suffered in an 8-1 loss at Dallas on New Year's Eve.

The 33-year-old Johnson, who has nine goals and four assists in 35 games, was hurt in the first period of the blowout. He tried to return for a shift in the the second period, but couldn't continue.
Coach Luke Richardson said Johnson flew back to Chicago and had no timetable for his return. Johnson, who scored twice in a 5-4 OT loss to the Stars on Friday, left the American Airlines Center after Sunday's defeat in a walking boot. See video.
The Blackhawks recalled forward Brett Seney from the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League to fill Johnson's roster spot. Seney, 27, has played in 29 games with the IceHogs this season, posting eight goals and 13 assists.

Johnson, in his 12th NHL season, has recovered well from a cervical spine injury that led to him having an artificial disk replacement in his neck two years ago.
Vegas Knights star Jack Eichel had a similar successful procedure for a damaged disk in the neck. The injury can lead to extreme localized pain and lack of mobility — plus radiating pain, numbness and loss of strength in one or both arms if a disc herniation presses on nerves.
