The 33-year-old Johnson, who has nine goals and four assists in 35 games, was hurt in the first period of the blowout. He tried to return for a shift in the the second period, but couldn't continue.

Coach Luke Richardson said Johnson flew back to Chicago and had no timetable for his return. Johnson, who scored twice in a 5-4 OT loss to the Stars on Friday, left the American Airlines Center after Sunday's defeat in a walking boot. See video.

The Blackhawks recalled forward Brett Seney from the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League to fill Johnson's roster spot. Seney, 27, has played in 29 games with the IceHogs this season, posting eight goals and 13 assists.

Also out for the Blackhawks are:

  • Forward Taylor Raddysh, one of only two Chicago 20-goal scorers last season, who went on IR Saturday morning with a left groin injury. The 25-year-old winger was hurt in his first shift at Dallas on Friday.
  • Speedy Andreas Athanasiou, the other Blackhawk who scored 20 times last year, has been out with a groin injury since Nov. 9. Athanasiou recently suffered a setback in his rehabilitation and there's no timetable for his return. He signed a two-year, $8.5 million contract last June.
  • Top defenseman Seth Jones, with a shoulder injury he sustained on Dec. 10 late in a loss to Washington. The 29-year-old D-man leads the Blackhawks in ice time per game with 25:25. He hadn't scored on any of his 60 shot on goal this season, but has 11 assists and anchors Chicago's blue line.
  • Forward Joey Anderson who made an immediate impact after he was recalled from Rockford on Nov. 24. Anderson has five assists and was a plus-5 in 13 games before suffering a lower-body injury on Dec. 17.

Johnson, in his 12th NHL season, has recovered well from a cervical spine injury that led to him having an artificial disk replacement in his neck two years ago.

Vegas Knights star Jack Eichel had a similar successful procedure for a damaged disk in the neck. The injury can lead to extreme localized pain and lack of mobility — plus radiating pain, numbness and loss of strength in one or both arms if a disc herniation presses on nerves.
