The next up-and-coming goalie in the Blackhawks organization, Drew Commesso, is learning from one of the best in the NHL.

The Chicago Blackhawks have a talented goalie prospect in Drew Commesso in the minors and he's only going to get better quickly.

Commesso "spent the summer training with a lot of NHL guys and spent a lot of time with Jeremy Swayman, really just studying him on the ice and off the ice. It was fantastic. I was super fortunate just to have him with me everyday. He's a great guy to learn from."

He didn't just learn from Swayman, who is one of the best goalies in the NHL and stepped into the NHL in a full-time role after toiling between the AHL and NHL a couple of years ago. Commesso also got to spend quality time with the other NHLers who were training at Boston University and learn from them.

"I'd say the biggest thing about skating with him (Swayman) is his compete level and how he tracks pucks and how focused he is, even in a summer skate." Commesso explains that it really pushed him seeing Swayman at the other end of the ice at 6:45 in the morning, putting in a full effort.

He added that "I know that if I can keep my compete level up with one of the best goalies in the NHL, not only will it make me better in the short-term, but the long-term. It was great to spend a lot of the time on the ice with him."

Commesso thought that his first AHL season was very productive. He learned from going through a rough patch near the beginning of the season, but was in full stride by the end. He should earn half the starts in the AHL this season, especially with Arvid Soderblom expected to open the 2024-25 season with the Blackhawks due to Laurent Brossoit's injury.

The Blackhawks are not short on talent in net as Commesso has a good head on his shoulders and is willing to put in the work to get better. He is in no rush and is just focusing on his game. Some goalies don't break in right away, but his opportunity in Chicago will come eventually if he keeps improving and working like he is.
