The Blackhawks should consider bringing in this veteran on a short-term deal.
The Chicago Blackhawks have had an eventful off-season. The Original Six club has added multiple new players to their group, as they brought in Bowen Byram, Jordan Greenway, Cole Smith, and Ian Cole. Yet, when looking at their roster, it is fair to argue that they could use another forward.
The Blackhawks would benefit by adding another skilled winger to their roster. Because of this, one free agent left who Chicago should consider bringing in is Anthony Mantha.
With it now being the middle of July, it is fair to wonder if Mantha would be more open to a short-term deal. If he is, he would make sense for the Blackhawks to sign as they look to take a step forward in 2026-27.
Mantha just had an excellent 2025-26 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 81 games, the 6-foot-5 forward set new career highs with 33 goals, 31 assists, and 64 points. If he replicated this form next season with the Blackhawks, he could be a strong fit in their top six and on their power play if signed.
Yet, even if Mantha's offense dipped back down to his previous career totals, he could still be a solid addition to Chicago's roster. The veteran winger has scored at least 23 goals four times in his career and easily would have done so more times if not for previous injuries.
Ultimately, on a one- or two-year deal, Mantha could be a player worth taking a flier on for the Blackhawks. Anything more than that would be a risk, though.
